Hingga akhir 1990-an, band ini memainkan gaya black metal tradisional dengan konten lirik berhala, tetapi kemudian berubah menjadi tema okultisme dan thelemic yang ditulis oleh vokalis utama mereka Nergal dan Krzysztof Azarewicz.
Meskipun musik Behemoth disebut bernuansa death metal atau thrash metal, Nergal mengatakan bahwa dia tidak suka band dikategorikan musik tertentu.
